Cabinet Hardware Explained – From Decorative to Functional

Today’s cabinets vary as much in style as they do in functionality. Although styles can range wildly from simple big-box manufactured face frame cabinets with slab panel doors to intricately crafted custom cabinets hewn from the hands of generations of craftsmen, some things just never change. The cabinet hardware that makes these cabinets both functional and decorative is virtually universal throughout.

Yes, there are minor differences in cabinet hardware from one style of cabinet to another, however, the major types of hardware can be found in any style or construction of cabinet. The two main types of hardware are decorative and functional.

DECORATIVE CABINET HARDWARE

Decorative hardware, sometimes referred to as surface hardware, consists of the pieces that are mounted to the outside surface of your cabinet doors and drawer fronts. They not only provide the means with which to open your cabinet doors, they also give your cabinetry that finishing touch. The various types are:

*handle pulls

*cup pulls

*knobs

*backplates

*ring, bail and pendant pulls

Handle and cup pulls are rigid and require two mounting screws to attach to the cabinet door or drawer front. Bail pulls also require two mounting screws, however, they can be rigid or swinging type bails. Knobs are just simple post-pulls that require one mounting screw. Ring and pendant pulls can be rigid or swinging and normally require one mounting screw although some may require two with a small center-to-center measurement.

The mounting hole spacing measurement is the most important measurement of a cabinet handle pull if you are replacing existing hardware. This measurement is taken from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other, thus it is called the center-to-center measurement (abbreviations include: C-C, C/C, CTC). Obviously if you are replacing existing cabinet pulls, you will need to match your new hardware center-to-center measurement with that of the holes already drilled into your cabinet doors. Common measurements are 3″, 3-1/2″, 96mm and 4″, however there are many more than just those four.

FUNCTIONAL CABINET HARDWARE

Functional hardware consists of the hardware pieces that make your cabinets do what they are suppose to do. Doors open and close, drawers slide out and back in, giving you access to the items you have inside. Basically, if your cabinets didn’t have any of this type of hardware in and on them, they would be pretty useless. These types include:

*door hinges

*drawer slides

Door hinges are simply the hinges that connect your cabinet doors to the actual cabinet but as simple as their function is, the types, sizes and options abound. The three main distinguishing types of cabinet hinges are concealed, semi-concealed and non-concealed. These all can come in a variety of opening angles, swing types (free-swinging vs. self-closing), overlay sizes, insets as well as finishes.

Drawer slides are the pieces of hardware that allow your drawers to slide in and out. They are sometimes referred to by other names such as drawer guides, drawer glides, drawer runners and drawer tracks. The three main types used on cabinets are: side-mount, side/under-mount and under-mount. These types can be further classified by the distance they allow a drawer to be opened such as 3/4 extension, full-extension or over-travel extension.

Cabinet hardware is not very complicated on the surface. It is the many options that these basic pieces come in that gets a little more in-depth, too in-depth for this simple primer on cabinet hardware.

Shopping for Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

Selecting new kitchen cabinet hardware is a lot of work, but it can also be a lot of fun. New kitchen cabinet hardware can completely change the look of a kitchen. Getting new hardware is the perfect way to feel like you are getting a new kitchen while not spending the amount of money it would take to completely redo your kitchen. Of course there are a number of things that should be taken into consideration whenever you start shopping for new kitchen cabinet hardware.

Quality
Everyone wants to find the highest quality items for the lowest prices, and this can seem to be a bit difficult when searching for cabinet hardware. It is important to realize that most retailers will mark up hardware two or three times what you can buy it for online. In most cases you can go directly to the manufacturer online and purchase the exact same kitchen cabinet hardware for a fraction of the price you would pay in a retail store. Just remember to start out by purchasing only one piece of each kind of hardware you intend to purchase. This will allow you to feel the hardware and test its weight to see if it is high quality. To find out if a piece of kitchen cabinet hardware is high quality, feel the weight of the piece in your hand. Higher quality hardware will weigh a lot more than lower quality hardware. Once you have confirmed that the pieces are of high quality, then it is time to order enough pieces to fill your need.

Style and Color
Of course it is very important to think about the overall look of the kitchen when purchasing cabinet hardware. There are so many different styles of hardware available that anyone can find one that will fit perfectly into their kitchen. Some pieces of hardware have very ornate designs, while others are very simple. Just think about your kitchen and the color of the cabinets. Also take into consideration the design of the cabinets and try to find pieces of hardware that match.

Color is also an important part of style. Choosing the right color for your hardware is important because certain colors of metal look better with certain colors of wood. Start by considering the color of the metal you need, and then you can start thinking about what kind of metal to choose. Some common metals for kitchen cabinet hardware include nickel, pewter, copper, and bronze.

Types of Hardware
Another important consideration to make involves the various types of hardware. You can choose from either knobs or cabinet pulls. Knobs are usually much more simplistic in nature, although the more ornate ones can even be two-toned. Cabinet pulls look more like handles, and they can sometimes be extremely ornate. On the other hand, they can also be fairly simple. Deciding whether you want knobs or pulls really just depends on how much metal you want to display on your cabinets. Also keep in mind how easy the hardware pieces are to use. Choosing hardware that is easily missed or hard to grab will only make it more difficult to open your kitchen cabinets. If anyone in your family has arthritis, then try out the hardware to see if it is difficult for them to use.

Another option that some people even choose is the option of no kitchen cabinet hardware. This is certainly the most simplistic way to go, and it is a valid choice that some people decide to make after considering all options. Some cabinets do not necessarily need hardware, so choosing to go without is a stylistic choice that is perfect for some decors

Decorative Cabinet Hardware (i.e. Handles And Knobs For The Rest Of Us)

Adding or replacing decorative cabinet hardware is one of the easiest facelifts you could possibly do for your cabinets.

If your cabinets are in pretty good shape, and not too dated, changing pulls or knobs is an easy thing to do. You’ll need to invest $100 to $300 on average to replace all the pulls and knobs in your kitchen (figuring 25-30 or so pulls or knobs).

If you cabinets look really old, brand new decorative cabinet hardware might stand out like a sore thumb. Depending on the situation, though, you could add rustic pulls or knobs to your cabinets, and they’d still look good (and would fit right in).

Your cabinets might also just need a good cleaning to get them sparkling again.

If you are starting fresh, and don’t already have pull or knob holes in your doors or drawer fronts (good for you!), the choices are almost endless. You can get 3″ center pulls, or knobs, or 96mm, or 128mm, or just about anything you want.

Keep in mind though, that handles with 3″ centers are the most common decorative cabinet hardware that there is. If you ever want to change handles in the future, there will certainly be tons of choices. If you go with, say 128mm handles, your future choices for handles will be limited, because you’ll have to get 128mm handles again. Also, these handles are larger (longer) than normal, so cost more. For example, a 128mm handle in stainless steel could cost $13 or more, where the same handle with a 3″ center could be $5 or less. Finish is also a factor in your cost. Stainless steel will cost much more than a nickel finish, but will look almost identical.

Replacing What You’ve Got

If you already have pulls, knobs (or both) then you must keep that in mind when choosing hardware. You have some alternatives, but you may be limited.

If you have pulls, measure the distance from mid-point to mid-point of each hole. This will give you the size pull you will need. You will often find they are 3″ centers.

If they are 3″ centers, you are in luck, because you will find most styles of decorative cabinet hardware are available with 3″ centers.

If you have a measurement other than 3″, you can look for that size. It may be difficult to find pulls that fit those holes. If you do find something in that measurement, it might not be the style you like.

What You Can Do if You Have Odd Sized Holes or Need to Cover the Holes Left by Previous Handles

Add a back-plate to your door or drawer front before you put your pull or knob on. You can simply drill new holds that work for your new handles (usually 3/8″ holes are what you need to drill, sometimes 1/4″). In this way, no one will see the old holes because they will be covered up by the back-plate.

Another easy alternative is to put two knobs where the pull holes were. With this option, you are only limited in the knob’s diameter. You will want to make sure the knobs aren’t so big that they will be touching each other when you put them on.

STYLE! What’s available in Decorative Cabinet Hardware?

Recent years have seen a surge in sleek, new styling. There are literally thousands of styles of pulls, knobs, and back-plates to choose from.

Anything from contemporary to rustic, colored or clear glass to solid brass.

You will also find several choices in theme-based hardware. There are several choices for children’s rooms, hunting themes, fishing, bugs, butterflies, frogs, and stones to name a few.

There are even pulls out there (from Amerock) that look like knives, forks, and spoons.

Popular Finishes to Choose from Include:

Burnished Bronze

Some brand names that manufacture good and reasonably priced hardware include:

Amerock

Belwith-Keeler

Epco

Wood Technology

What’s This Going to Cost?

The cost will vary as much as how many styles are out there.

You might find small knobs for as little as $2.00 or less a piece.

Several pulls fall into the $3.00 to $6.00 range for each pull.

If you are going for a contemporary, sleek European style, where the pulls can be as long as 12″ or more, you may pay $25.00 or more for each pull.

Some glass knobs and pulls can also run you into some money, from the low teens to as high as $40.00 each.

Pulls for appliances (appliance pulls – that are used if you have a wooden insert over your appliance and basically need a handle for it) can be quite costly as well, over $20.00 on up (but they are very large and long).

Reminder

Be sure to count each door and drawer front you have, twice. You’d be upset with yourself if you ordered your pulls or knobs online or made a special trip to the hardware store, just to find you are short one pull or knob! It’s been done!!

Where to Get Decorative Cabinet Hardware

Online is a very convenient place to get hardware. Home improvement stores carry decorative cabinet hardware, but it may actually cost you more to get hardware there, and they won’t have as big of a selection as online stores.

You may even be lucky enough to find just what you’re looking for at your local thrift store. If you can, you’ll no doubt save money, but most likely won’t get good quality products.

Amerock hardware (and almost every good company has this guarantee for many of their hardware products), has several handles and knobs that have what they call their Guardian Finish. It is a lifetime guarantee on your hardware finish to never tarnish, or they replace the hardware free of charge.

If you enjoy garage-saling or auctions, you may find something there. Usually though, when you use those types of venues, you will be very limited in your choices and only find a few of what you need.

In my experience, the best place to purchase hardware is either online or at your local home-center. If you really want to see and feel your handles before you purchase them, go to your home-center and pick something out. If you have the time, write down who manufactures the hardware, its product number, and then check out prices on the internet. You’ll no doubt find the same product for less over the internet.

Bottom Line: Get what you Love

The possibilities for decorate cabinet hardware are endless. Look for hardware that is not only practical and will last a long time, but that you also fall in love with and enjoy!!

Tips For Picking Out Quality Cabinet Hardware

When selecting cabinet hardware for your kitchen or bath you should first determine if your cabinets have existing holes in them. If you have existing holes drilled you will need to make sure your new cabinet hardware will fit in the holes. For example if your cabinets are drilled for cabinet pulls you will need to measure the distance between the holes. The new pulls will need to match your existing conditions. If you have single holes drilled in your cabinets you may have to use knobs in this situation as pulls normally require two screws and may not end up in the correct location on the cabinet door or drawer. Most cabinet pulls have a 3 inch screw hole spacing. However, pulls can come in many other dimensions. If your cabinets are brand new chances are they do not have holes drilled in them. In this case you have many more options.

When selecting cabinet knobs and pulls you should take into account the size of your doors and drawers to make sure the hardware you choose will fit. Most cabinet hardware is packaged with a standard size screw. You should measure the thickness of your cabinets to make sure the screws in the package will work for your condition. If the screws are to long or short you can purchase screws separately at any home improvement store.

When installing cabinet hardware on new cabinets I would suggest purchasing a template to help you locate the screw holes on your cabinet doors and drawers. Templates can be ordered online from most sites that sell cabinet hardware. The template will help you mark your cabinets before drilling screw holes. Before you measure use masking tape so you can mark the cabinets with a pencil. The tape will also protect the finish of the cabinets.Drill holes using a drill bit that is 1/16 of an inch larger than the diameter of your screws. Take your time when drilling holes. Do not push to hard or you could damage the cabinets when the drill bit comes out the back side of your door or drawer.

Popular brands of cabinet hardware include Amerock, Top Knobs, Dynasty Hardware, Jeffrey Alexander and Hickory Hardware. There are others but these brands offer affordable options. Check the internet for deals on cabinet hardware. Ordering your hardware over the internet is easy. There are several sites where you can view the various styles and designs. You can always order just a few pieces to make sure they are what you want before placing your order.

Cabinet hardware does vary in quality. Here are some things to consider when judging the quality of the hardware. Do the knobs or pulls have hollow backs. Most quality cabinet hardware is solid. Look at the finish. Does the manufacturer offer a warranty on the finish. Most quality cabinet hardware is made of zinc. Other metals include brass or bronze.

When shopping for cabinet hardware, consider the design of your kitchen. Are you going for a modern look or a traditional look. Do you want your cabinet hardware to match the finish of your other fixtures, like faucets or lighting fixtures. Choose a finish that will contrast with the finish of your cabinets. Do not be afraid to be bold. Have fun and enjoy your new hardware.

Understanding Projector Screens

If you work with a projector, you should have a projector screen. Some people argue that having the screen is equivalent to using a wall, but this isn’t the case. There are plenty of benefits that come with having the screen instead of a wall:

Advantages of the screen

Smooth image: When you use the screen you tend to have a smooth, crisp image. The reason for this is because the screens have a vinyl coating that allows the projector’s light to be reflected back to the viewers. These sheets come in handy and significantly affect the picture qualities such as contrast, brightness, and viewing angle.

You can move them around: In addition to the units giving you a better view, they are also easy to move around; therefore, you can use them even in areas without walls.

Types of screens

When you are looking for the screens, there are many of them that you can go for. Some of the best ones are:

Fixed-frame: A fixed-frame screen features a screen material that is stretched over a metal frame. Since you don’t have to roll the fixed screen up and down, you can maintain a tight, tensioned surface to provide you with a completely smooth image. The fixed units are also easy to install as you don’t have to connect power to them.

Motorized: Also, known as retractable screens, these units are ideal for the movie time. The units easily roll up into a long metal case that you mount to the ceiling or wall. The most identifying feature of the unit is the case that houses a powerful electric motor that easily raises and lowers the screen at the touch of a button.

While the units are great, their main flaw is that they are more cumbersome to install. This is because you have to supply power to the electric motor. The units also feature a trigger input so that they lower themselves automatically as soon as turn on the projector.

Factors to consider when buying the screens

When purchasing the units, you need to consider a number of factors. One of these factors is the screen gain. This is simply the amount of light that is reflected back to the viewers. When the gain is high, there is more reflected light and as a consequence a brighter picture.

You also need to consider the screen color: This is solely dependent on your preference and the industry you are in. If you are looking for high-quality images, go with a white screen.

Catering Your Business Meeting

Business meetings can be tedious affairs, often taking up a lot of the day, but they are also the place where things get decided and offer a chance for team members to input their ideas over new products or services. The business meeting may elicit groans from those who have to partake, but they are a necessary evil. Instead of brown bagging it, what about a catered meeting that will give everyone something to look forward to and bring people together again in a less formal way–as they eat?

Most catering companies will have a dedicated menu specifically for the corporate world. They include things that can be eaten on the go, or hand held and of course they will also cater to sit down lunches or dinners as well, depending on your needs. The best part about having your lunch catered is that it arrives ready to eat when you want it to, no one has to leave the meeting to make or put the food out. It also doesn’t matter where you meeting is taking place. Your boardroom, outside or at a client’s place, it doesn’t matter to the caterer as it is their job to take your order to you at the specified time and location.

Catered food is known to be of high quality, because with so many caterers around, no one would ever order from one that had a bad rating either online or by word of mouth. You can also customize your menu to suit a specific theme or to avoid certain allergens that may make some people ill and of course there will be plenty of food to go around, and beverages like coffee and tea are usually also included in the fee.

About the fee–catering your office meeting is cheaper than you may think. It is hassle free for you and your employees of course but it is also better than asking your associates to bring out their own food at the appointed time. This means they’ll sit where they are and eat, but with a catered meal they will get up, fill their plates, chat with each other and eat in groups which is more conducive to the meeting’s overall feel once you get back at it after your lunch break.

Catering is something that has been done for years and something that corporations the world over swear by. Isn’t it time you looked into catering for your next meeting?
